Ten Relatable Facts
I keep trying to tell y’all that I’m not a perfect writer. Here are some absolutely true things about me as a writer. I offer them without explanation or embarrassment.
1. I am just now getting the hang of “its” vs. “it’s” without having to look it up every time. Same with “who” vs. “whom,” “that” vs. “which,” and “effect” vs. “affect.” Truth be told, I still struggle with that last one.
2. My TBR (to be read) list contains more than a hundred physical books in my office, several dozen on my e-book reader, and more than a few on my assorted wish lists.
3. I read some poems and think “meh” or “I didn’t get that.” Sometimes I wonder whether I am qualified to be a poet if I do not understand certain poems.
4. I look at some books or poems and wish I had those ideas.
5. I get my best ideas whenever my notebook and pen are far away. I may have chanced dinner burning to write something down before I forget it.
6. I find it difficult to edit my own work.
7. I subsisted on gummy bears, tea, and Ritz crackers with cheddar cheese while I read Harry Potter book 7 all in one go. I cried after Dobby so much that my red rimmed eyes were visible for a week.
8. I read books on grammar and syntax for fun.
9. I try to recreate the tiny space of an airplane seat before I write with strategically placed blankets, cups of tea, and small snacks.
10. I resent the need to pee when I’m in the middle of a good run with either reading or writing.
